The first-ever Sussex Scottie Club UK Walkabout was blessed with sunshine in the early autumn this weekend.

My own two, Onyx and Winter, arrived at Stansted Park in West Sussex and wondered why we were hanging about in the car park. They must have sensed something was happening.

We were soon joined by a new member who had been admitted just earlier in the week, the lovely 10-month-old Otis, and then Ted (and their Mums & Dads). We set out under a blue, sunny sky like old friends, admired along the way and met other doggy friends. We paused in front of something called a “stately home” for photos and had to put up with the people staring at it and at some distant Highland Cows before continuing up a tree-lined road. It wasn’t the Cairngorms, but it was defintiely very Scottish in its feeling!

There were lots of sniffs, the occasional bur that stuck in beards, and pheasants calling! The humans swapped tales of Scotties past, history podcasts and other Scottie Club walkabouts.

Another pause for photos on a tree-trunk “bench”, on which Winter amused everyone with her mountain goat impression and the 4 Scots smiled for the cameras before we began the descent downhill again – just dodging a few light sprinkles of rain. Otis with Mum and Dad began their drive back to Croydon and the rest of us sat down for a cuppa and cake in the dog-friendly garden centre. We parted with hopes to see one another soon for another jaunt. It’s just a pity the light railway wasn’t running that day, so we could recreate the Scottie Train, but maybe next time!
